Industry Interview With Michael Loh from Wireless Dynamics Inc
NFC Magazine: Hello Micheal, please tell us about yourself and your company? As VP Engineering, my tasks include the concept to production of Wireless Dynamics SDiD products including our SDiD 1010 and SDiD 2010 which are NFC based devices. I lead a team of highly energetic and qualified engineers both here at our headquarters in Calgary, AB, Canada and as well as in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. I have had an exciting career in Telecommunications industry since 1993, working at Bell Northern Research (Nortel) on various systems including CDMA infrastructure, MCK Communications Inc. on PBX Extenders and at Novatel Wireless Inc. In the beginning of 2003, I was invited to join Wireless Dynamics Inc., founded by the previous co-founder and President of Novatel Wireless, Mr. Ambrose Tam. Our initial goals was to position Wireless Dynamics Inc. as a leading class ODM (Original Design and Manufacture) for the wireless industry. Working with our partners in China, we developed a team to architect, design, develop and manufacture wireless products. Our initial product was a multimedia GSM/GPRS cellular phone. This phone was brought to market for a while in China. During our efforts in cell phone design and manufacture, we investigated cell phone integration with RFID and NFC. We realized there was a potential market for products in small, peripheral form of RFID and NFC and thus the creation of our first product, the SDiD 1010. NFC Magazine: What is the most enjoyable part of your current job working with NFC technology? I particularly enjoy being on the leading edge of NFC technology. WDI's SDiD 1010 is one of the early available devices to more largely deploy NFC technologies. We are also regularly challenging ourselves and are challenged by our customers to explore different uses of the NFC technology, not only those discussed in the NFC Forum but other concepts as well. My team really enjoys working on this new technology. Our current challenge is to make our design even smaller, our SDiD 2010, which is a miniSD form NFC device. This product is due to be in production soon and is seen as a more acceptable consumer market device. NFC Magazine: Tell us about the biggest challenge NFC technology and your company faces today? Adoption - NFC is a great idea, but the market is fairly small with only early adopters and trials existing today. Does not create a very large sale market. NFC Magazine: What is NFC technologies greatest strength? The ability to utilize peer to peer communications including connecting SmartCard IC as one side of peer providing flexible contactless applications. NFC Magazine: What do you feel is the biggest weakness of NFC technology at present time and why? NFC seems to be loosing battle to be recognized in some key areas of technology integration including: Pharmaceutical, item level tagging, etc. NFC Magazine: Which NFC technology industry enabled applications, products or services will you or your company develop in the future or do presently provide? Beyond enabling NFC with hardware, WDI is working with partners developing applications for payment, loyalty, transit, access control and pairing. About Wireless Dynamics Inc Wireless Dynamics Inc.
