Seven Consortium Members Unite to Trial First Mobile Phone EMV Payment for Secure and Contactless Payments

Paris, France, 06 November 2006 - The city of Strasbourg in France is to host the first trial of mobile phones for secure EMV payments.

The pilot, driven by a seven-strong consortium, will commence in November with the support of two hundred consumers and over fifty merchants throughout the town.
Groupe Crédit Mutuel, CIC and NRJ Mobile customers will be invited to participate in the pilot with the help of a specially designed mobile phone from Sagem Communication. Powered by the MasterCard® PayPass™ contactless technology, supported by an EMV capable SIM card from Gemalto, contactless readers from Sagem Monetel and an NFC (Near Field Communication) electronic chip designed by Inside Contactless, the trial is the realization of the innovative and commercial expertise and approach of all seven consortium members.
Their partnership has been brought together to realize this first European trial of a full EMV payment transaction through a mobile phone. Key to this will be the use of the secure EMV (M/Chip) PayPass payment application hosted on the phone’s SIM card. The SIM is coupled with the NFC chip which is connected to a special antenna.
With mobile phones an everyday item for all consumers, the opportunities to use a phone for payments are endless; from the Saturday supermarket shop through to the cinema and the restaurant in the evening – the everyday gesture to pull out a payment card could as easily be imitated by the phone. This pilot will monitor just how successfully consumers adapt to the use of the phone in the transaction process.
Trial participants will place their mobile phone near to the contactless terminal of participating merchants. This will trigger an audible and visual signal. The amount to pay will then appear on the screen of the phone with the request for the phone owners’ personal code, which the owner will enter using the mobile phone keypad. The payment is confirmed when the phone is held, for a second time, against the terminal.
The payment method mirrors the secure transaction process of the more traditional smart card environment: Use of a personal code to validate the payment; authentication of the ‘cardholder’ (in this case the phone owner); followed by the final demand for authorization. All of which is supported by MasterCard’s contactless payment technology PayPass – ensuring a fast and secure transaction. The phone becomes an additional payment ‘card’ for the owner, as their bank card is replicated and ‘lodged’ within the mobile’s SIM card.
